10 Horror Movies to Watch For Back to School

While I’m no longer in school, I still enjoy back to school movie marathons. When I was growing up many TV channels used to actually host them and I would stay up late trying to watch some cult movie that I hadn’t seen before. Now you’d be hard-pressed to find a TV channel doing something like that, maybe Comet. But, in the world of streaming, it’s never been easier to put together your own. That’s what my little brother did, he went back to school this week and asked for some movie recommendations, which is how this list originally came about. Mostly to remind him that school isn’t forever unless…

    Monster Monday: The Bugbear

Lumped in with the Bogey’s, Boogeyman, and Bugaboos the Bugbear is thought to have popped up around Medieval times finding its way in folklore as a creepy bear that had nothing better to do than lurk in the woods waiting to scare children. But, my introduction to the Bugbear didn’t come from Grazzini’s La Spiritatta from 1561. No, like most of you reading this mine came from Roleplaying games. Most notably Dungeons and Dragons, where the Bugbear is seen as a much bigger and smarter version of Hobgoblins. First introduced to the game in 1975, in the Greyhawk supplement and has remained a staple in the game ever since. Mostly…

5 Books to Read if You Liked Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

If like me you loved the new Scary Stories to To Tell in the Dark movie and want to revisit some nostalgic horror classics than I’ve put together this list just for you. Growing up I loved horror books like this. Some of my favorite memories of this are of me sitting under the covers with one of the books from the list checked out from the library, my explorer’s trench flashlight with the red lens put in for added effect, getting so scared that I’d have to leave the flashlight on until I fell asleep. Only to get fussed at by my parents when they came in to get…

I Finally Saw Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and it was Amazing

I’ve been waiting to see this movie since I first heard that one of my favorite book series from childhood was being turned into a film. That excitement then turned to fear that it would be toned down somewhat and lose the gore factor and horrific iconography that firmly scarred every child that read the books, but then I saw the trailer and all was well again. Due to life circumstances, I’m somewhat late to the party, but it was worth the wait that’s for sure. The film which is set in the 1960s’ takes a note from the Goosebumps films in how they brought the collection of short stories…

    Monster Monday: The Bloedzuiger

I’ve been replaying the Witcher series and just finished reading the first book from the book series The Last Wish, which I highly recommend. So with that in mind, it’s only natural that I talk about one of my favorite monsters from the series. The Bloedzuiger is a humanoid sized reptilian, leech creature that hangs around swamps looking for its next meal. It moves very slowly and in-game you can outrun it or use the strong fighting form and easily defeat it. Though when you first come across them it does feel like you might be in for a fight, just because of the sheer size of the creatures. Of…

    Monster Monday: The Rust Monster

The Rust Monster is one of my favorite monsters from Dungeons and Dragons. Mainly, because it makes you think about how you’re going to handle it, if you aren’t wearing or carrying any metal it’ll leave you alone, but if your party is in a dungeon than chances are someone is carrying metal. Over the years it’s seen a lot of variations to its abilities, mostly just making it a more effective creature. Though it still looks like a weird mix between an insect and crustacean. Though the Rust Monster was actually inspired by a cheap plastic Kaiju Esq toy that Gygax came across. It’s also one of the first…

Serial Magazine Issue 12 Is Out Now

Hey guys, Serial Magazine issue 12 is now out and it’s a doozy. As usual, it’s awesome to be able to be part of the pulp fiction revival. If you haven’t read Serial Magazine yet, now is a great time to start. This issue adds another installment to the horror serial The Unsettler which as a horror fan is one of my favorites so far. I also had the pleasure of editing the story Beyond the Bay by Chris Preston which paints a very interesting picture of what the afterlife might be like and the novelette The Parapalegic by Lawrence Dagstine a mystery story with a protagonist confined to a…

    Monster Monday: The Yhetee

Monster Monday is changing, but just a bit. Instead of only looking at strange and wonderous creatures from Folklore I thought it would be fun to put the spotlight on some of the undermentioned but creative creatures from various fictional and game worlds as well. And what better to start off with than the Yhetee. If you are a fan of Warhammer Fantasy then you might know about the Yhatees who are described as being fur-covered and almost Ogre like in their habits. They tend to use stone and wood weaponry and are usually found in the armies of the Norsca or ogres. “The worst thing about a snowstorm is…
