I Finally Saw Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and it was Amazing

I’ve been waiting to see this movie since I first heard that one of my favorite book series from childhood was being turned into a film. That excitement then turned to fear that it would be toned down somewhat and lose the gore factor and horrific iconography that firmly scarred every child that read the books, but then I saw the trailer and all was well again. Due to life circumstances, I’m somewhat late to the party, but it was worth the wait that’s for sure.

The film which is set in the 1960s’ takes a note from the Goosebumps films in how they brought the collection of short stories to life. Where our group of protagonists finds a book of stories and those stores just happen to come true. Unleashing untold horror on those who are named in them.

But, what really makes the film amazing, besides the fact that brings to life the scarecrow that’s scared the hell out of me for as long as I can remember is the fact that its also very much a character-driven story featuring a lot of the problems and conflicts that were relevant in the 1960s, Vietnam, Nixon, and racism are all alive and well. Making it clear that while Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is rated PG-13 it’s very much for the now adults that grew up reading it just as much as it is for the viewers and readers who are experiencing it for the first time.

I don’t want to give any more of it away if you read the stories growing up or even recently you should go see for yourself the stories that are told in the movie. But, I will spoil it a bit by saying that it’s set up for sequel something that my friends and I are definitely excited for. So if like me you are already decorating for Halloween and want to take a long-overdue nostalgia trip you should go see Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark while it’s still in theaters.
