My Pandemic Binge Watching Extravaganza

During the Pandemic which if you live in the US is still raging I’ve been binge watching a lot of my favorite shows. Mostly just to have one in the background. Favorite shows are weird especially ones you grew up watching, I think revisiting them can be nostalgic in a good way, like catching up with an old friend.

Here’s what I’ve been watching for most of 2020.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy is a no brainer for me, watching the Scoobies and her battle it out with armies of the Hellmouth is always primetime entertainment in my book.

I also read more Buffy and Angel tie-in novels this year so between that and the newest Buffy and Angel comics reboot I’ve definitely been in a Sunnydale mood lately.

I usually re-watch a lot of Angel episodes every year, but this year I didn’t watch any. I think this is because I’ve kind of avoided the darker plot lines and the apocalyptic plot that was central to the series in the latterseasons. Don’t get me wrong I still love Angel, but this year has definitely been more about light-hearted horror, sci-fi, and fantasy for me.

The Vampire Diaries

Yup, judge me all you want but I absolutely love this show. I remember when it came out my friends and I used to have three and four-way calls why we watched it just to discuss different episodes. We were all horror-loving weird kids growing up in rural Virginia, and this show takes place in rural Virginia which to us was a big deal.

Supernatural

Supernatural came to an end this year, over 15 seasons of Sam and Dean fighting monsters and casually jumping the shark. I first came into Supernatural during season 3 and have been hooked ever since. Though in the later seasons I’ve come to enjoy the monster of the week episodes a lot more than the main plots. I still think it’s a great show and I’m sad to see it end, but glad that it finished on a high note.

There’s been talks of spinoffs but I’m not sure if the CW is ever going to make one or if they’ll be able to capture the magic of the original show. But, they’ve definitely got a lot of story material to play with if they decide to go that route.

Teen Wolf

You might be catching a trend by now I do really like the more Urban Fantasy TV shows.

Teen Wolf, is magical show for me, because it’s so good. I remember the first time I ever watched it, we’d seen the commericals that MTV was airing and decided to watch it as a joke thinking it was going to be terrible. Because at the time MTV was known more for the reality stuff then orgininal programming and what it did have on the air was super angsty.

Needless to say we were blown out of the water and still am. Teen Wolf while it can be angsty at times isn’t anywhere near as angsty and broody as the Vampire Diaries. Its gory, the mysteries are fulfilling enough that often it’s hard to guess who they’re actually after, and the monsters especially those in the later seasons are actually scary. I also liked how it started as a small town folk horror centered around were-wolves and ended on a cosmic horror note.

It’s also got some very original monsters in it. Like the Kitsune who’re actually in the Vampire Diaries books randomly enough, but the Void Kisune and the Berserkers are my two all time favorite baddies in the show. In a bit of cool news it’s been announced that this year there will be a new season since and the original cast has all signed on. So I’ll probably be rewatching it all again this year too.

Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated

I love Scooby-Doo, but sometimes the older series doesn’t hold up to my nostalgia and can at times feel overly childish. The movies are gold though, however, Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated is to me how all-new Scooby-Doo reboots should be done, it’s funny, all the characters have very distinct personalities, and each season has massive mysteries. While the show ended after two seasons there are still like 30 episodes to watch, so if you like Scooby-Doo like I do it’s definitely worth it.
