What I’m Reading This Week

I’m a voracious reader but now that I’m back at a full-time job my reading has slowed up somewhat, but I still thought it would be fun to share what I was reading through this week.

The Colorado Kid by Stephen King

I loved the show Haven which had five seasons on the Syfy channel and have been wanting to read the book that its loosely based on ever since. I will say that the book is completely different from the TV show. But, I like it, I’ve read a lot of Stephen King over the years and this is different in every way from what he usually writes.

That being said it’s really good, if your a fan of pulp mysteries or Hard Case Crime novels then you’ll love this book. And better yet it was announced recently that he’s going to be writing another book for Hard Case Crime, which I’m now eagerly looking forward to.

Dust by Chris Miller

I’ve been obsessed with the Splatter Western series of books by Deaths Head Press since I first heard about it. I read through the first two books in one sitting. Something I haven’t done since I was given my first taste of Louis L’amour and would read multiple paperbacks by him a day. Usually, while on vacation.

If you’ve never read a weird western I think this series is a great place to start. The books are all stand-alone though it seems that they exist in the same world as one another, which is fun and gives the books a sense of continuity.

I’ve always wanted to like weird westerns because it combines two of my favorite genres, but until now most of the books I tried were good horror books but not good westerns. These books on the other hand make sure to hit those great western tropes while still crafting a great horror story.

Dust, tells the story of what seems to be a time traveler named James Dee as he searches for the mysterious town of Dust, which seems to be a focal point for malicious cosmic forces. And so far it’s the first book in the line to feature a cosmic horror story. I’ll finish reading it this week, I’ve been trying to pace myself with this one since the next book in the Splatter Western line won’t be out for a little while.

The Demon Comics by Jack Kirby

I love comic books always have probably always will, and while I love the newer deeply dramatic storylines of newer comics, sometimes it’s fun to read the classics. For me, that means classic Green Arrow, Hawkman, Blue Devil, and of course The Demon. And that’s just on the DC side of things.

The Demon follows Jason Blood a warrior from the time of Camelot who is cursed to carry inside him Merlin’s demon Etrigan. Who Merlin and others can call on to fight against supernatural evils.

Etrigan and Jason Blood’s story lines have changed a lot over the years. Especially, when the New 52 universe happened. Either way I think it’s one of Kirby’s great works, many would probably disagree.

And now that I’ve started watching Star Girl on the CW I’ll probably read through Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E soon.
